From parades to t-shirts, parties to “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” novelty pins, St. Patrick’s Day instills a little March madness in all of us. While it’s totally okay to party with friends and family, many of us use this day as an excuse to feast and consume copious amounts of alcohol.

Amidst all the green-themed hoopla is a serious issue: St. Patrick’s Day weekend is notorious for being very dangerous to anyone out on the streets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 700 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver during St. Patrick’s Day holidays between 2006 and 2010. In 2010 alone, 129 lives were lost. While the police will be amping up safety programs such as roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints, it’s still important to know how to keep you and your family safe during this festive holiday.
